City of Bones Theme of Appearances

For someone who's faced down giant centipede monsters and demons filled with maggots, Clary's awfully critical of her own physical appearance. To make matters worse, she is surrounded by so much man-candy we're shocked her eyeballs don't get diabetes. It seems that drinking from Raziel's Cup must not only make you a Shadowhunter; it also makes you smoking hot. It's not just the guys, either. The woman are lookers too, from Clary's mom (yeah, we said it) to Isabelle, and every Downworlder faerie in-between, Clary's got a lot to compare herself to in City of Bones.

Questions About Appearances

  1. What physical attributes does Clary value, and why?
  2. Would you consider Clary to be shallow? Why or why not?
  3. Why does Madame Dorothea value a different body type than Clary does? Does that tell us anything?
