- Lovelace begins communicating the Clarissa affair to Belford early on, but the guy doesn't say much. He's staying out of it.
- Belford pops up more after Clarissa unwillingly runs away with Lovelace.
- He's all, "You better treat the girl right. Or else."
- Clarissa first meets Belford at Mrs. Sinclair's and has a pretty good impression of him.
- She tells Anna that he's the only halfway decent dude there. That's not saying a whole lot, though.
- Belford really lets a few insults rip after Lovelace rapes Clarissa.
- He steps up after Clarissa gets thrown in prison. It takes a while, but Belford gains her trust and gets her out of there.
- Belford finds Clarissa lodgings at Mrs. Smith's and gets her some medical care. It's too late, but nice thought anyway.
- Clarissa likes him so much that she makes him the executor of her final will.
- Belford is also pretty preoccupied with his other friend, the unfortunate Belton. Their names sound creepily similar.
- Belford takes a trip out of town to see Belton once last time before he dies, leaving Clarissa vulnerable to the dastardly Lovelace.
- When Clarissa dies, Belford passes out all of her letters like a good boy.
- He ends up marrying Lovelace's cousin after Lovelace dies. Hooray!
