Walter

Walter's purpose in the "Clerk's Tale" is to showcase Grisilde's steadfastness by tormenting her. This role makes him the antagonist, the dark force against which Grisilde must deploy her virtuous character. Grisilde herself would never classify Walter in this way, but we the readers know better.
