Character Role Analysis
Grisilde
Although it begins with a focus on Walter, the "Clerk's Tale" actually follows the rise, fall, and rise of Grisilde. Its purpose is to showcase the exceptional steadfastness Grisilde shows in the face of challenging trials. Its more melodramatic moments encourage us to sympathize with Grisilde's suffering. Only by seeing things from Grisilde's point of view can we truly understand the strength of character that she demonstrates.
