Adam Ewing Timeline & Summary

  • Aboard the Prophetess, Adam Ewing is returning to San Francisco from a business trip in Australia.
  • The ship is undergoing repairs in the Chatham Islands, where Ewing meets Dr. Henry Goose. Ewing and Goose two strike up a friendship.
  • Ewing tells Goose about an Ailment he believes he has, and Goose diagnoses it as a parasite. Goose starts a dangerous treatment to rid him of the parasite.
  • Back aboard the Prophetess, Ewing discovers a stowaway in his cabin—an escaped slave by the name of Autua.
  • With Ewing's help, Autua earns passage on the ship.
  • Ewing's journal cuts off mid-sentence, only to pick up nine parts of the book later, right where it left off.
  • The Prophetess makes a pit stop in Bethlehem Bay, a quaint little ocean hamlet of missionaries and slave traders (or are they the same thing here?).
  • Thankfully, the ship doesn't stay there long.
  • On the next leg of their trip, Ewing gets more and more ill from Goose's "treatment."
  • Notice our quotes there? Goose has been trying to kill Ewing this whole time.
  • Autua steps in at the last minute, scares off Goose, and saves Ewing's life, taking him to a nunnery to nurse him back to health.
  • Having been saved by a slave, Ewing vows to devote himself to the Abolitionist cause.
