  • In the present, Timothy Cavendish attends an award party where Dermot "Duster" Hoggins throws literary critic Felix Finch off a balcony.
  • Since Cavendish published Hoggins's book, Cavendish rakes in the dough when sales of the book skyrocket.
  • Dermot's brothers feel that Cavendish profited from the Hogginses, and they want their share.
  • Unable to come up with the money, Cavendish phones his brother, who tells him he can hide out in Hull.
  • Cavendish takes a few trains to Hull. On his final pit stop, he accepts a joint from a stranger in a public bathroom.
  • Totally stoned, Cavendish stumbles into Aurora House, is shown to his room, and falls asleep.
  • In the morning, Cavendish realizes that Aurora House is a nursing home. A beastly woman named Nurse Noakes takes his keys away.
  • Cavendish tries to escape but is caught by Withers the gardener and spanked in front of everyone.
  • Later, at a meal, Cavendish has a stroke.
  • When Cavendish recovers, he is determined to escape Nurse Noakes and Aurora House.
  • Cavendish's brother cannot help. When Cavendish calls, he finds out that his brother died. A stroke. Must run in the family.
  • Two other residents, Ernie Blacksmith and Veronica Costello, come up with a plan to break out of Aurora House.
  • Ernie, Veronica, and Cavendish steal a vehicle from Johns Hotchkiss, the son of another resident.
  • Withers catches up with our escapees when they stop at a tavern in town, but Mr. Meeks, who stowed away with Cavendish, starts a bar brawl. The angry patrons knock out Cavendish's pursuers.
