• Summer 1940: Queenie helps Maddie lure a German bomber to the RAF base at Maidsend. Maddie and Queenie share a bunker during an air raid that night and tea and iced buns the next day, and so their friendship begins. During the next air raid, they shoot down a Messerschmitt 109 together. Maddie and Queenie meet the Bloody Machiavellian English Intelligence Officer playing God.
• Autumn 1940: Dympna Wythenshawe and Maddie take Queenie up for her first flight, and they see the green flash.
• Early 1941: Queenie and Maddie part ways, Maddie to the Air Transport Auxiliary (ATA) and Queenie to the Special Operations Executive (SOE).
• 1941: Queenie sees Maddie only three times all year. She visits her in Manchester, telegrams to ask her to come to the hospital when her brother Jamie is in bad shape, and jumps from her plane in parachute training.
• Summer 1942: Queenie makes two practice parachute jumps from Maddie's plane.
• September 1942: Queenie sees Maddie when Maddie is her ferry pilot. Queenie completes a successful overnight mission in France.
• April 1943: Queenie, Maddie, and Jamie are all stationed at the same SOE airfield. Queenie is both completing brief missions in France and playing the role of Eva Seiler, liaison to Berlin, in order to interrogate German prisoners. After a particularly violent confrontation, Queenie is given leave to decide whether she wants to continue SOE work; she goes home, where her mother questions her and her nanny knits her a lovely pullover.
• Summer/Early Fall 1943: Queenie completes extensive training to prepare her to go undercover in France.
• Early October 1943: Queenie and everyone else involved in Operation Dogstar gathers at the SOE airfield.
• October 11, 1943: Maddie flies Queenie to France. Queenie parachutes out of their injured plane.
• Late October 1943: Queenie looks the wrong way before crossing the street and is captured by the Gestapo.
• October-November 1943: The narrator is a prisoner of the Ormaie Gestapo. She writes her "confession."
• December 1, 1943: Julie is being transported with other prisoners when Damask circuit ambushes the van. The rescue attempt goes wrong, and Julie cries out for Maddie to shoot her before the Nazis can begin torturing her.
