Inman runs away from the Confederate Army.
Inman meets Veasey and keeps him from killing a girl.
Inman is betrayed by Junior to the Home Guard.
The Home Guard tries to execute Inman, but he survives.
Inman is taken in by the woman with the goats.
Inman is sheltered by Sara and gets her pig back from the Federal soldiers.
Inman arrives at Ada's farm and finds she isn't there, and then follows her tracks up into the hills.
Inman finds Ada near an abandoned Cherokee village.
Ada and Inman recognize each other, confess their love, and spend a few days and nights together.
