Brain Snacks: Tasty Tidbits of Knowledge
Though they're not part of the Bible, there are actually two apocryphal books called The Epistle of the Corinthians to Paul and The Third Epistle to the Corinthians. One lists out all the crazy things the people in Corinth are saying and, in the other, an author poses as Paul and answers them. No scholars seriously think these are authentic letters from the time period, even though they do appear in a version of the Bible used by the Syriac Orthodox Church. Sorry guys. (source)
The word "Corinthian" means "of Corinth," but nowadays, it's also a synonym for a sexually immoral person who doesn't follow rules. Man, the Corinthians cannot catch a break. (source)
The recent Supreme Court case Hosanna-Tabor Evangelical Lutheran Church and School v. E.E.O.C. came about when one of their teachers threatened to sue the school after she was fired for taking medical leave. The school cited 1 Corinthians 6:1—"When any of you has a grievance against another, do you dare to take it to court before the unrighteous, instead of taking it before the saints?" The teacher eventually went on to lose in the highest court of the land. Paul—still a figure of authority after all these years. (source)
