Think of Papa as a kind of down-home Yoda, dispensing life advice and showing his young apprentice the true path to enlightenment. His insistence that being a man amounts to just "doing what's got to be done" (14.32) is the American Gothic version of Yoda's "Do or do not. There is no try." Powerful stuff, that is.
