Death Comes for the Archbishop Book 3, Chapter 2 Summary

Jacinto

  • Bishop Latour and his guide Jacinto leave Father Jesus' place and head onward toward the town of Laguna.
  • When they reach Laguna, Bishop Latour is happy to receive a warm welcome. He decides to sleep under the stars that night with Jacinto as company. They have a little conversation about the pretty names that the Native Americans have given to the mountains and hills around them. Then they talk about whether the stars in the sky are actually entire worlds, or the souls of great leaders who have passed away. Latour thinks it's the first; Jacinto thinks it's the second.
  • As they settle to sleep, Jacinto thinks about how amazing it is that Bishop Latour acts the same way with him as he does with anyone else. Jacinto is used to seeing white men be two-faced liars. But Latour is an honest, straightforward man.
