Canto X Summary

Get out the microscope, because we’re going through this poem line-by-line.

  • Catherine the Great sends Don Juan on a trip to England to represent Russia as a sort of ambassador.
  • For the first time in years, Don Juan is able to write to his mother and tell her that he's doing well. She's happy to hear it, but she takes a moment to encourage him to remember his Catholic religion and not convert to Orthodox.
  • Don Juan travels through Germany and Holland, dazzling everyone he meets with his beauty and charm.
  • Don Juan eventually arrives in Britain, where he's enchanted with the roads and buildings. Byron can't help but take a shot or two at England's taxes and tolls.
