Protagonist
Character Role Analysis
David Hume
Just because this is a philosophical enquiry doesn't mean that there's no main character. He may not be a protagonist in the same way as Harry Potter or Bilbo Baggins, but there's no doubt that Hume's the main man. In philosophical or academic works, writers sometimes try to stay invisible. Hume, however, doesn't seem too bothered about that. Sure, his writing is formal and he sometimes retreats into the background, but he's not shy about revealing his thoughts, criticisms, and doubts. If anything, this helps draw us in and makes the book more accessible.
