If anyone helps guide Joel through his journey, it's past Joel. The memories that he experiences help him to realize who he is and what he had in his relationship with Clem. In fact, we even see this change affect Joel's perception of Clem, since it's Clem who helps him start to evade Stan and Howard by hiding in other memories. Of course, this isn't really Clem; it's a mental projection of Joel's subconscious, reinforcing his new understanding of her.
