Character Role Analysis

Sergeant Troy

There's no getting around the fact that Troy is the antagonist of this book. Young, handsome, and cocky, he waltzes through life assuming he can get whatever he wants out of anyone he meets. He also believes firmly that the meaner you are to a girl, the more she'll like you. He has no problem lying to women if it means getting what he wants, and his arrival in Weatherbury really messes things up for many people, including Fanny Robin, Bathsheba, Farmer Boldwood, and Gabriel Oak.
