  • Soon after, we look in on a church ceremony where Sergeant Troy is standing and waiting for Fanny to come in and get married. Fanny never shows though, so Troy gets frustrated and leaves. He meets Fanny outside and she apologizes for getting the name of the church wrong. He storms off and tells her he's not sure if he'll ever marry her now. Talk about moody.

  • Sergeant Troy meets Bathsheba in the town of Bath. She is there to break off their relationship, but he convinces her to marry him instead.
  • After Troy has secretly married Bathsheba, Farmer Boldwood accosts him and tries to give him a bunch of money to stay away from Bathsheba. Troy messes around with Boldwood before finally showing him the newspaper announcement of his wedding. Boldwood is crushed and Troy revels in it.
  • At his wedding ceremony, Troy tells Bathsheba and all the women to leave so he can get drunk with the men. He orders all of his men to drink hard liquor if they plan on keeping their jobs.
  • While travelling on the road with Bathsheba one day, Troy runs into Fanny Robin, who is living in total poverty. He tells her to meet him Casterbridge so he can give her some money. By the time he makes it to Casterbridge, though, she's nowhere to be seen.
  • When he gets home, he finds Bathsheba waiting for him. Fanny Robin is dead and her casket is in their living room. When he looks into the casket, Troy realizes that Fanny Robin also died with a child that he and she had together. Overcome with guilt, Troy leaves Weatherbury.
  • While taking a swim near the English shore, Troy gets pulled out to sea by a riptide. He is saved by sailors, and decides to let everyone back home assume that he has drowned.
  • Troy travels with the sailors to America to start a new life; but he soon finds that life takes a lot of hard work. So he travels back to England to live in the comfort of his wife's fortune.
  • Before reaching Weatherbury, Troy has to take a job with a travelling show to make ends meet. One day, he sees Bathsheba in the audience and disguises himself to keep her from recognizing him.
  • Later, he goes to Farmer Boldwood's Christmas party to announce his return and take Bathsheba home. Boldwood, though, shoots and kills him before any of that can happen.
