At first, we think the movie is going to be about Jerry Lundegaard, but thirty minutes in it focuses on Marge, the true protagonist.

Marge is the one who cracks the case and restores order to the world. Although she herself is content, not particularly conflicted internally (it would appear), she has to navigate a confusing world with murderers like Carl and Gaear and puzzling figures like Mike Yanagita.

Ultimately, her goal is to return to normalcy, to settle down into the domestic peace of raising a family and continuing to work as a police chief. She seems to attain that goal in the end. Marge is the character we care about the most.
