Character Analysis
La Pasionaria, the famous orator and inspirational figure for the Republicans, is another real historical figure who makes an appearance in the novel. We never see her, but we hear Joaquin recite some of her slogans. More notably, we also see Karkov talk with one of her groupies in Madrid the night before the attack, who relates that she had just been in to announce the wonderful news that the fascists had been fighting each other. Actually they were killing El Sordo. Hemingway doesn't like La Pasionaria very much.
