Character Analysis
Lt. Paco Berrendo is the only fascist soldier we remotely get to know. He's one of the soldiers who fights El Sordo on the hill, and loses his best friend in the process. After Captain Mora gets killed for being a dumbass, he's left in charge of the operation, which means killing poor unconscious Joaquin and ordering all of the dead men's heads cut off for identification. He's not a bad guy, though: he's a devout Catholic, who says lots of Hail Marys, and doesn't really like what he's doing. He also has the distinction of being Robert Jordan's last victim at the end of the book.
