  • Will is in woodshop, wondering why he has to be doing this. He questions the idea of faith, and why fate has landed him in this awful situation.
  • His woodshop teacher Mr. Jacks asks him to make more of the gnome sculptures he's been making.
  • Will meets Angela and finds her interesting.
  • Will is home, and his grandparents have left a note saying they are out playing bocce ball; he joins them on the court.
  • At the grocery store, Will runs into Angela and the two engage in an awkward conversation.
  • Will hears about a local girl that has drowned on the radio—her death might have been a suicide.
  • Will starts freaking out, thinking he or his sculptures are somehow responsible for the deaths going on.
  • Will refuses a call from Mr. Jacks, then overhears Pops answering odd questions—when he discovers it's a reporter from the local news, he takes the call.
  • Ignoring his grandparents' fear that he might implicate himself as a suspect, Will agrees to meet the guy at the beach.
  • After an argument and some accusations, Will turns back and hits the reporter, knocking both of them to the ground
  • Surprised by his own aggression, Will gets up and walks away as the reporter shouts insults at him.
  • Back in his room at home, Will ruminates over his unusual and unfortunate circumstances while icing his swollen hand.
  • The next morning, a detective, Lieutenant Dahl, visits the house and questions Will about the incidents.
  • Will goes to the hospital for x-rays and returns with his hand in a splint and medication.
  • Finally Will realizes that he needs help and decides to takes the meds.
  • Ready to be done with all of this, Will heads to school to clean out his locker, where Mr. Jacks confronts him about wanting to leave the program.
  • Needing a medical clearance to bounce, Will is examined and questioned by a nurse.
  • Once Will is cleared, Mr. Jacks interrogates him about his sculptures, but Will has no idea why they've all disappeared or where they might be going.
  • Will is on the beach, and has a moment with the severed head of a fish that brings him joy.
  • His peace of mind is interrupted by Pops, nagging him about school and life issues, so Will confronts him back about being placed in the school for "dead-enders" (515) and asks him to put him back in a normal school.
  • At home, Will brings the television into his room, eats dinner, and stays in the house for three days.
  • Angela visits and asks Will why he's been missing classes.
  • Will finally shares some of the details of his parents' death and tells her that he believes his father's intention was to kill himself and his wife.
  • Will takes his first shower in three days and comes back to life a bit.
  • He and Angela visit the spot where the two teenagers died, and where one of Will's sculptures has been placed. They plant two of Will's wooden sculptures in the sand.
  • Will receives a mysterious call from an anonymous caller asking who's going to die next, so Will asks that the caller reveal his identity and tell him where the sculptures are being taken to.
  • Will heads to a track meet to find Angela, and they have an awkward conversation in which Will asks if she would miss him if he were gone and she refuses to directly answer his question.
  • They get into it and Angela tells Will to "grow up!" (1232).
  • Will returns to the beach to do some more thinking.
  • He is surprised to see Angela, who is holding one of the wooden sculptures and curious how it ended up in her front yard, which Will totally can't explain.
  • Will's creeped out but assures Angela he'll make this all stop.
  • Once home, Will's grandmother tells him he looks bad and needs more sleep, as grandmothers are inclined to do.
  • The next morning, Will wakes to find his front yard covered in wooden statues along with a sign with the word NEXT? written on it.
  • Will's grandparents want to know if Will has been taking his medication.
  • Pops and Will get into it again.
  • Will gets another freaky prank call with a Sinatra soundtrack in the background—this time, the caller wants to know why Angela isn't dead.
  • Will asks the guy to meet him at the beach.
  • After a few insulting remarks, Will wrestles the black jacket and cap guy to the ground and gets him in a headlock.
  • The guy runs away and Will recognizes that he is powerful, brave, and loveable, as well as that things will eventually get better.
  • A wet Will returns home to dry off, greet his grandparents with a better attitude, and admires all of his beautiful wooden whirligigs.
