Character Role Analysis
Dr. Stephen Albert
Dr. Albert manages to have a profound effect on Yu Tsun in the hour that they spend together. In explaining the wisdom behind the work of Ts'ui Pen, Dr. Albert reconciles Yu Tsun to his ancestor and erases the shame he had felt at having a crack-pot great-grandpa. Yu Tsun is awed by Dr. Albert's solemnity and mystic fervor, noting that there's something priestlike about him, and something almost immortal about his face. He's so grateful to the scholar for restoring Ts'ui Pen's garden (and the family honor), that he calls him a "friend"... right before he shoots him in the back.
