Chris is Alice's hippie lifestyle guru. She not only gives her sartorial advice, but she introduces her to a wide array of drugs after her initial experience with the kids back home. When Alice and Chris run away to San Francisco together, we get the feeling that Alice is taking her cues from Chris—she probably would have gone home long before she actually does, but doesn't want to seem uncool in front of her mentor.
