Carothers "Roth" Edmonds Timeline and Summary
MoreCarothers "Roth" Edmonds Timeline and Summary
- Roth Edmonds is a descendant of old Carothers McCaslin down the female line of the family, and Zack Edmonds's son.
- His mother dies in childbirth and he's raised by Molly Beauchamp.
- Molly moves into Zack's house to nurse Roth along with her own son Henry. The boys grow up together as brothers.
- When Roth is seven years old, he realizes that he's the white landowner's son, while Henry is his father's black tenant farmer's son.
- He decides that means he's too good to hang out with Henry any more.
- A month later, he regrets it, but the damage is done.
- When Zack dies, Roth takes over the plantation.
- He manages the plantation's affairs, and gives his great-uncle Isaac the monthly amount that's been his allowance since relinquishing the plantation to Roth's grandfather McCaslin Edmonds.
- Roth also keeps visiting Molly once a month with some of her favorite candy. He does it more out of guilt and obligation than compassion.
- Roth gets involved in Lucas's family drama after Molly comes to him to say she wants to divorce Lucas because of his obsession with finding buried treasure.
- In his forties, he has a clandestine relationship with a part-African American woman during one of his hunting trips. They live together for a month, and then Roth returns home, leaving the woman behind.
- The woman's gotten pregnant during this time, and ends up having Roth's son.
- Roth decides to not marry the woman, but can't face her himself. So he makes his great-uncle pass along an envelope filled with money to her and tell her he won't marry her. What a guy.
- We learn in a later story that Roth kicked Molly's grandson Samuel off his plantation because he caught him stealing.
- Molly blames Roth for what happened to Samuel after that—Samuel's other crimes and eventual death.
