Character Analysis
Buck McCaslin is the other twin, along with Buddy. Like Buddy, Buck also claims to be a committed bachelor, but he actually ends up marrying in his sixties and fathering a child, Isaac.
When their slave (and as it turns out, half-brother) Turl escapes the plantation to visit his lover in the neighboring Beauchamp plantation, Buck begrudgingly rides over to bring him back. There, he makes a silly mistake and climbs into his neighbor Hubert Beauchamp's sister Sophonsiba's bed. The only solution, Hubert thinks, is for Buck to marry Sophonsiba. Brother Buddy uses his amazing poker playing skills to win Buck's freedom back. The brothers return to their plantations still happily single. Alas, we learn from later stories that Buck eventually gives up his bachelorhood to marry Sophonsiba.
Buck's son Isaac believes that God chose Buck and Buddy to begin the long process of freeing the slaves, but it was going to take a lot more men like them to finish the task.
