Guide Mentor
Character Role Analysis
Neil and the Boy
Neil is the boy's guide to the "heart" (3.13) or "art" (3.14) section of the library. But the boy also acts as Neil's guide. His desire to learn and his need to be protected from bigoted library employees help Neil see that his job in the library is important and capable of bringing him satisfaction. So, they guide each other in important and lasting ways. Sadly, the relationship comes to an end when Neil is on vacation. For some reason, the boy doesn't come back to the library. Hopefully, he's doing well, but it seems a shame that they can't get to know each other better… the one that got away.
