Character Role Analysis

Jaggers

Jaggers may seem gruff and mean at first, especially when he keeps telling Pip that he doesn’t approve of what his benefactor is doing, but we soon discover that Jaggers is a beacon of truth, drilling down to the heart of the matter. He helps Pip along his complicated path toward becoming a gentleman.

Herbert Pocket and Biddy

We're going to lump these two together, because they serve almost the same roles: they both gently remind Pip to be a better person. Biddy helps him remember that Joe has always loved him and cared for him, and Herbert unwittingly shows Pip that being a gentleman is more about how you act—about having "ever cheerful industry and readiness" than wearing nice boots (58.64).
