Grandfather

Grandfather's job is to say, "Don't do that." But the characters do it anyway, so then he has to sweep back in to deliver a moral lesson that doesn't make any sense in the context of the film. Here he is doing his best Lorax impersonation.

GRANDPA: You do with Mogwai what your society has done with all of nature's gifts. You do not understand. You are not ready.

We're not sure what the gremlin incident has to do with environmentalism. But it's not like Grandfather was there at all, so maybe he's just speculating. With his message that misses the mark, and the fact that he never warns Rand of the consequences of having a mogwai, Grandfather is a terrible mentor.
