Character Role Analysis

Rita

Pretty much all of the interesting character roles in this movie are filled by either Phil or Rita. Rita definitely steps up as the movie's mentor figure. Phil remarks on several occasions about how Rita is the kindest person he's ever met and that his greatest goal is to be worthy of her love.

Rita is a genuinely good person who is kind to everyone she meets. But she's not naïve, and she totally knows when Phil is trying to manipulate her by using information he's learned about her interests and background. In the end, the movie suggests that we should all learn to be more like Rita.
