Professor Lupin

You were expecting us to say Dumbledore, weren't you? While Dumbledore is still around (fulfilling the role of "Why won't you stop talking in riddles and just tell them what to do?!") it's Lupin who actually gets something practical done.

Lupin teaches Harry to face his fear and fight the Dementors. Without Lupin, Harry wouldn't know how to conjure a Patronus. And, until Harry and Sirius reunite, Lupin's the person who knew his dead parents best, allowing for a couple scenes of nostalgic reminiscing. Expecto tears!
