Bessie Timeline & Summary

Bessie is the third child born in the Delany family.
She lives in Raleigh, North Carolina until she begins teaching in Georgia in her early twenties.
After she saves enough money, she moves to Harlem with her sister Sadie.
Bessie studies dentistry at Columbia University. She faces a lot of discrimination but passes with flying colors.
After graduation, Bessie opens a practice with her brother Hap in the heart of Harlem. They get hit with hard times during the Depression, but manage to stay afloat.
Bessie is forced to quit her job to care for dear old mom after she moves to New York.
Bessie's mom dies. In their grief, Sadie and Bessie decide to move to Mount Vernon, a suburb outside New York City.
