Character Role Analysis
Hildy
Hildy's the hero of the film… though what successful heroism means for her is a little unclear.
Sometimes, Hildy seems to be trying to get to Albany to marry Bruce. Sometimes she seems to be trying to get the Earl Williams story and/or get Earl off death row. These two goals are often at odds; she can't both be in Albany and write the Earl story, no matter how fast she writes.
Professional success or domestic bliss? Can she have them both? To quote endless think-pieces: can women really "have it all"?
