The Great Silent Majority: Section 4: What's Next? Summary

Don't Worry, Nixon Has Got the Future Covered, Too

  • Nixon doesn't want anyone to worry about this plan. He's already got it up and running, and it's totally kicking butt.
  • Soldiers are already coming home.
  • The South Vietnamese army is just getting stronger.
  • Enemy forces are looking weaker.
  • And American causalities are down.
  • But before letting America get too excited about hearing this news, Nixon wants to lay out his future plans.
  • He wants to completely withdraw all troops from Vietnam in the near future.
  • If "near future" sounds vague, Nixon wants everyone to know that that's intentional. You can't just let all of your secrets get out into the open, you know.
  • In fact, Nixon wants everyone to know that this whole plan might have to change. So try not to get too excited.
  • One of these changes will occur if the enemy decides to exploit these new policies.
  • Nixon wants Americans and the South Vietnamese to rest assured that if the North gets all aggressive, he'll send the troops back in with a new purpose: to completely demolish the armies of the North.
  • This isn't a threat, according to Nixon. It's a promise.
  • So, Nixon wants Americans to realize that there are two paths forward.
  • One path is that America can withdraw all troops and immediately end the war…even though the country is going to end up with a mess on its hands if the war is ended.
  • The second path is Nixon's path: Vietnamization and slow withdrawal.
