What's Up With the Title?
Hunches in Bunches follows the secret formula Dr. Seuss developed to title many of his other books. Wish we could let you in on it, but there are forms to sign and then notarize, lawyers to be haggled with, and incantations to be uttered in rituals most other-worldly. It's a lot of legal mumbo-jumbo. Sorry, nothing we can do about it…
Fine. Since you asked nicely, we'll give you a few of the formula's key aspects, but you'll have to figure out the rest. Here we go:
- KISS or "Keep It Simple, Silly": No need to complicate matters, a few words will do.
- Free Sample: The poem between the covers is about Hunches and they come in Bunches. So, the title gives the reader-to-be a taste of what's to come.
- Intrigue: What are the Hunches and why do they come in Bunches? Are those the Hunches on the cover, the guys with hands for hats? Why are they dressed like that? What do they do? All these questions just require you to break out the book for a read.
- Rhyme: Since Dr. Seuss is well known for his great use of rhyme, many of his titles come with a rhyme as well. Not all, so this is more of a variant of the formula.
If you take a look at our other Shmoop guides on Seuss titles, you could possibly piece together the good doctor's secret title formula in its entirety. Oh, but we've said too much already. Promise us you won't tell the lawyers.
