Beckham (Christopher Sayegh)

Character Analysis

Beckham is mostly comic relief in the movie, even though his character becomes part of a pretty dark subplot for Will at one point.

He's a local kid who hawks DVDs near the U.S. camps, and his aggressive—and somewhat odd—marketing techniques catch Will's attention. At one point, when Will complains about the quality of discs he had previously purchased, Beckham promises to make it up to him by offering him...er, well, see for yourself:

BECKHAM: What do you want, donkey porn? Girls on dog? Gay sex, man?

Will passes—but really, is this who Beckham thinks his target market is? Donkey porn enthusiasts? In any case, Beckham's first language is clearly not English, and sometimes the phrases and pieces of culture he's picked up from English speakers are surprising—and yes, a little hilarious:

BECKHAM: You're an EOD? Boomala, boomala?

WILL: That's right.

BECKHAM: It's fun, no? It's cool? It's gangster. Yeah?

WILL: Yeah, I think so.

From the sprinkling of words like "gangster" and "donkey porn" in his vocab, we're guessing that Beckham might be getting a lot of his English lessons from films rather than actual people.

Anyway, Will seems to get a kick out of the kid—and he goes completely berserk when he thinks Becks is dead. It turns out to be a false alarm, but Will is so shaken by the whole situation that he can't even talk to Beckham once he's realized his mistake. Sad—they had a nice little bromance going.

And yes, he calls himself Beckham because of the soccer player.
