Asian influence. Pound studied Japanese poetry and theater and translated many Chinese poems, especially those of Li Po, whom he loved. Pound’s translations were often loose and experimental. Although it exceeds the standard limit of 17 syllables, "In a Station of the Metro" captures the strange rhythm and mood of a Japanese haiku as well as any poem written in English.
