President Whitmore (Bill Pullman)’s Timeline and Summary

He begins the movie with his presidency apparently in trouble—well, at least according to the public and pundits.
Then, aliens attack, and he's slow to come up with an effective response (partially because he's getting bad advice from the Secretary of Defense).
He gets himself together eventually, though, and ends up planning and participating in the attack that saves earth.
