Character Role Analysis
Nick's Father
Nick definitely looks up to his dear old dad, who at first seems like the tough-love father type who makes his young son watch an un-anaesthetized Caesarian operation (maybe a nice frank discussion at the kitchen table about the birds and the bees would have been better?). But after the Indian man's suicide, Nick's father is pretty defeated as a mentor. Nick still trusts his father's moral authority, since he asks him hard-hitting questions about death and suicide, but we also get the sense that Nick's opinion of his father has changed by the end.
