Where It All Goes Down
Vienna, Late 19th and Early 20th Centuries
Up until 1938, when he fled the dangerous, anti-Semitic climate of Nazi Austria, Freud spent his adult life in Vienna.
As one scholar notes, The Interpretation of Dreams "incorporates much of 1890s Vienna, from its politics to its sexuality and its slang," making it a unique window into the history and culture of Freud's city (source).
What's more, while the 1899 edition certainly gives us a glimpse of Vienna in the 1890s, later editions of the book continue to update that vision, revealing subtle changes in the city's cultural and intellectual climates throughout the first decades of the twentieth century.
