Character Analysis
Adelaide de Montemare
We never actually get to meet Adelaide de Montemare in person, but she's definitely worth noting. Adelaide is Bois-Guilbert's first love, but while he's off fighting the Crusades to make himself worthy of marrying her, Adelaide has other plans. When Bois-Guilbert returns to France he finds that Adelaide has married a low-level northern squire. Even to this day, Bois-Guilbert can't understand why she settled down with some small-time guy instead of a world-famous hero like him. He obviously doesn't understand the ways of the heart, or the fact that glory doesn't always translate into adoration.
