Character Role Analysis

Dora

Pretty obvious, right? The first half of the movie is a rom-com, so a romantic interest is a must. The whole ride just breaks down without it.

Guido falls in love with Dora after, not one, but two meet cutes. He then tries to win her affections through increasingly elaborate schemes.

In the second half of the film, Guido takes some serious risks to reaffirm his love for her. He uses the concentration camp's intercom system to send her the most dangerous status update ever. And he risks his life to sneak into the women's side of the camp to rescue her. This last gamble is when his life-long streak of luck finally ends.

Dora loves Guido, too. Being a non-Jewish Italian from a respected family, the only reason she's even at the camp is because she chooses to go, not wanting her family to be separated.
