Talk about sitting on a heap of lies—in Luna, the titular character can't show anyone who she really is, not even her dear old mom and dad. Instead she has to take on this double persona: by day she's Liam, typical teenage boy, and by night she's Luna, blossoming teenage girl. It's all enough to make your head spin. In order to keep up this charade, Luna has to do all sorts of things like hide her accessories, lie about trying out for baseball, and even sneak out just to go shopping with her own sister. And that's not where the lying stops either; Regan has to lie through her teeth too in order to protect Luna's identity.
Questions About Lies and Deceit
- Why doesn't Regan just tell Chris that she's going shopping with her brother on the Saturday that he asks her to the rave?
- Why can't Luna reveal who she is to her parents throughout high school? Why does she have to keep up a front?
- How does Regan feel about keeping Luna's secret? How does it affect her to be lying constantly?
Chew on This
Regan lies to Chris about Luna because she's afraid that if he knows the truth, he'll reject both her and Luna as freaks.
Even though Luna sometimes slips the truth into conversations with her parents, they only see the lies because that is what they want to hear.
