How the heck do you pick an antagonist in a book like this? There are just so many terrible people and forces. Ugh. But as far as Maggie is directly concerned, her mother does everything a mother shouldn't do, and nothing a mother should. She beats our main girl, insults her, and then kicks her out of the house and talks smack about her to all of the neighbors. This woman just has no redeeming qualities.
