Maggie Johnson Timeline and Summary

  • Maggie is a "small ragged girl" (2.2) living in a seriously jacked tenement with alcoholic parents who abuse her and her brothers. Needless to say, the kids spend a lot of time trembling in corners.
  • Maggie's "thin, white" (3.30) face blossoms to the best of its ability—she seems to have transcended the ugly realities of her surroundings. Miracle.
  • Enter Pete into the tenement and into Maggie's life.
  • Maggie cannot keep her eyes off of Pete, and is convinced he's the answer to all of her troubles.
  • He's such a hunk, he never loses a fight, he's unafraid of the law, and he has money to do things.
  • Maggie wonders what he eats and how rich he is, while also appreciating how dumpy her own life is.
  • Pete asks Maggie out, and—duh—she's game.
  • Maggie starts going to a lot of dance halls and theaters. Pete wants some love, but she's not down.
  • She's hooked, or as Crane puts it, "Swaggering Pete loomed like a golden sun to Maggie" (8.12).
  • Jimmie and Mom catch on to Maggie's torrid affair, resulting in Maggie getting tossed into the streets.
  • Maggie is now pursuing Pete—he's her only hope, really—but he bails on her.
  • Maggie returns home, only to be kicked out again, so she hits the streets.
  • No one will have her there either, though, and she heads for the river.
  • Jimmie reports Maggie's death to his mother.
