How we cite our quotes: All quotations are from Memento.
Quote #4
LEONARD: He killed my wife. He took away my f***ing memory. He destroyed my ability to live.
TEDDY: [feels his pulse] You're living.
LEONARD: Only for revenge.
TEDDY: Well, then we'll get the bastard.
There's living and then there's living. Leonard doesn't really count his type of existence as life and suggests that the only reason he hasn't offed himself is because he needs to avenge his wife. Teddy might seem like the bad guy during the whole movie, but this scene is pretty redeeming. He appears to be right about Leonard's need for revenge. Leonard needs some sort of greater purpose to keep on going, despite the difficulty of his condition.
Quote #5
LEONARD: I have to believe in a world outside my own mind. I have to believe that my actions still have meaning, even if I can't remember them. I have to believe that when my eyes are closed, the world's still here. [closes his eyes] Do I believe the world's still here? [flashes of him lying with his wife, sporting a new "I'VE DONE IT" tattoo] Is it still out there? [opens his eyes] Yeah.
Notice how much less certain he sounds when he says these words this time. compared to the conviction he says them earlier (chronologically later) when he repeats them to Natalie in the diner. It's almost like this increase in certainty is evidence of the very meaning that it argues for.
