Character Role Analysis

Eric

Since Eric plays different roles in different lifetimes, he also sometimes finds himself in the role of mentor. In 2011, he's the one who leads Edward to the Viking grave and ends up making Edward famous, and in 1944, Erik leads David to safety off Blessed Island. Even as Erika in 1848, she cares for the twins and tells them stories before bed, which helps with their behavior a whole lot. And it's King Eirikr who leads his wife, Queen Melle, on the journey through seven lifetimes of love. He's pretty good at pushing other folks down the paths they're meant to take.

Merle

Sometimes Merle takes the reigns as a mentor for Eric and other characters. In 2073, she's the one who hatches the plot to save Eric, who understands what's up on Blessed Island, and leads Eric to the truth. In 1920, little Merle becomes Eric Carlsson's friend, inspires him to finish his masterpiece, and even guides him to some important insights. While Melle in the 10th century may seem like an equal to her brother, her love is a guide for him. And later, Melle holds onto the story of his life and sacrifice as a way to honor him and guide others.
