Question: The novel is so rich in its detail about time and place. How did you do your research and gather the historical facts?

Answer: The research was so much fun! I poured through old southeast Kansas newspapers, yearbooks, letters, and journals from both 1936 and 1918; read books on World War I, the Great Depression, bootlegging, immigrants, life on the rails, and the Spanish Influenza; and listened to train songs and folk music.
