• Young Tom Natsworthy is dusting museum exhibits when the great moving town of London catches a small mining town and devours it.
• Tom skips work to watch the carnage, and is punished by being sent down to the Gut.
• In the Gut, Tom meets up with Thaddeus Valentine—his hero. They're talking to the salvagers when one of them pulls a knife on Valentine.
• Desperate to be a hero, Tom chases the assassin, who turns out to be an ugly girl named Hester Shaw. She says Valentine is the one who disfigured her face.
• When Valentine discovers that Tom spoke to Hester Shaw, he pushes Tom down the same waste chute where Hester had just jumped to her supposed death.
• Tom survives, and he and Hester fight their way back to London.
• As Tom and Hester encounter land pirates, sky pirates, and slave traders, they're also pursued by Grike, a Stalker who wants to kill them.
• Grike is about to kill Hester when Tom finds a sword and slays Grike first.
• Tom and Hester meet up with the sky pirate Anna Fang, who takes them to the stationary stronghold of Batmunkh Gompa.
• Valentine is prowling around there. Tom alerts everyone, but it's too late. Valentine's already sabotaged the air fleet. Tom watches helplessly as Valentine slays Anna Fang in a duel.
• Hester and Tom take Anna's airship back to London, where Tom drops Hester off so she can kill Valentine.
• In the air, Tom is attacked by missiles. He fires back, blowing up Valentine's airship and everyone aboard.
• When Tom swoops back down to get Hester, the two of them fly away. A massively powerful superweapon, MEDUSA, malfunctions, blowing London to smithereens. Only Tom and Hester survive.
