Character Analysis
Mr Brewer is the managing clerk and Septimus’ boss at "Sibleys and Arrowsmiths, auctioneers, valuers, land and estate agents" (4.87). Before the war, he took Septimus under his wing and enjoyed a paternal relationship with him, encouraging him both professionally and personally. Mr Brewer is very proud of Septimus’ war record and gives him a good promotion when he gets back. This man represents the patriarchal and traditional view of heroism and the war that Septimus despises. Before the war, he didn't know any better, but after, Septimus is able to see how distorted this view really is.
