Idabel is really Joel's only friend at the Landing. She and her sister are the only other kids for miles around, and since Florabel is kind of a jerk he's left with Idabel. But that doesn't mean their friendship isn't true; Idabel saves Joel from a poisonous snake, and even when they fight they know how to make up.
