Joel doesn't get much guidance; his mother is dead and his father is paralyzed and unable to speak. He mostly has to find his own way in the world. But Zoo, the cook, is probably the closest thing he gets to a spiritual teacher. She invites him to prayer meetings and insists that he come, and also is the most forthcoming of the people at the Landing about what's really going on there.
